Survey results: tech use in the field

As part of another project I was working on, I did a survey of graduates to gauge their use of technology at work and in the field. The results were surprising:

What type of technology is regularly used in the adventure workplace? Green = little use, Yellow = extensive; n = 61

From this data some conclusions can be drawn:

  • the respondents are primarily day guiding, given the low use of map and communication devices
  • digital technology sees relatively little use, and is potentially a means of differentiating an operation; even photo/video has relatively low use, given it could potentially be used every day
  • as primarily guide respondents (see below), they have little computer use during their day or as part of their duties
  • I am surprised at how low the tech usage rates are, given what I know about how effective some specific devices are (such as smartphones for carrying ERP files and emergency communication)

What software or applications are used in your adventure operation?

Who filled out this this survey? It was directed to ODA/ODAN grads via social media.
